Welcome Experiential Education Preceptors
As an experiential education preceptor, you have the unique opportunity to educate the next great generation of health care professionals. From mentoring students to distributing foundational knowledge in all things pharmacy, your invaluable experience is part of what sharpens our students’ NSU Edge.
Our curriculum integrates introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences (IPPEs and APPEs). With over 800 dedicated pharmacist preceptors across diverse settings in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and globally, we offer students exposure to community, hospital, and clinical practices. Preceptors, serving as clinical affiliate professors, provide invaluable expertise and mentorship in their specialties.
About Student Training
IPPEs: Early Training in Community Pharmacies
- In these experiences, students are exposed to the role and responsibilities of a professional community pharmacist. Students are further coached in the importance of effective communication between fellow pharmacists, patients, and other health care providers, as well as basic education around drug distribution.
- Legal, ethical, and practice issues in the pharmacy are also discussed with their preceptors.
IPPEs: Early Training in Hospital Pharmacies
- Students participate in the entire institutional pharmacy lifecycle, including drug storage, drug security, policies, and procedures. This also offers students exposure to drug distribution on a larger scale.
- Activities include prescription preparation, the unit dose system, use of references, and inventory management.
APPEs: Advanced Training Off-Site
- Fourth year student pharmacists complete 6-week APPEs at approved sites with an NSU approved preceptor; assignments are based on preceptor availability and student preference.
- This experience includes direct patient care experiences and elective experiences related to specialty health care areas, such as internal medicine, ambulatory care, and more.
How Do I Become a Preceptor?
We’re excited to have you help guide our students through their pharmaceutical journey. We are always seeking qualified preceptors and sites that are open to our student pharmacists.
In order to be considered for a preceptor position, please fill out the online application with the information requested below. The application must include this information in order to be processed in a timely fashion:
- The Completed Preceptor Application
- Current Pharmacy License
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Syllabi
If you’re looking to become a preceptor at a required pharmacy practice experience, check the radio button on the application to affirm that you will follow NSU’s College of Pharmacy syllabus, including goals, objectives, and grading format.
Once we’ve received all of your materials, a faculty member will reach out to set up a site visit to meet you and any preceptors located at your site. If your store, pharmacy, or hospital has a current affiliation agreement with NSU, only you will need to be added as a preceptor. If there isn’t an established affiliation agreement, the process will take longer to complete (between three and six months).
