Dr. Karla Rivera graduated with high honors from Nova Southeastern University Puerto 
Rico Campus in 2024, where she earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Following 
graduation, she completed a Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1) Pharmacy Residency through 
Nova Southeastern University in affiliation with the Mennonite Health System. Driven by her 
passion for teaching and commitment to advancing the pharmacy profession, Dr. Rivera 
pursued a career in academia following residency training. She currently serves as a Clinical 
Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, with a practice site in Internal 
Medicine, where she works with an interdisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes. Dr. 
Rivera is dedicated to the education and mentorship of future pharmacists and strives to 
contribute to the continued evolution of patient-centered pharmacy practice.

Dr. Karla Rivera’s research interests focus on substance use disorders (SUD), medication
assisted treatment, and vulnerable patient populations, with an emphasis on qualitative 
research methods. Her work explores patient experiences and perspectives to better 
understand barriers, outcomes, and the impact of pharmacotherapeutic interventions on 
quality of life and recovery. Dr. Rivera aims to utilize qualitative data to help inform 
pharmaceutical and patient care decisions, improve interdisciplinary approaches to 
treatment, and contribute to evidence-based policy development within addiction 
medicine and pharmacy practice.
