About the Program

This program offers participants functional knowledge and skills in the area of physical assessment. The advanced knowledge/skills gained from this certificate program will serve to enhance the delivery of the core elements of both a medication therapy management (MTM) and a Professional Pharmacy Model Initiative (PPMI) service model in pharmacy practice. As pharmacists earn provider status this is a must course. Ask over 3,600 pharmacists who have already achieved it!

Types of Activity

There are both Knowledge-based and Application-based activities within this program.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the benefits of physical assessment skills for pharmacists and perform the following:
  • a medical history
  • a general assessment of a patient
  • a mental status examination
  • vital signs on a patient
  • an examination of the integument
  • an ear examination utilizing the otoscope
  • head, nose and throat examinations
  • a neck examination
  • an examination of the thorax and lungs
  • a cardiac examination
  • an abdominal examination
  • a vascular examination
  • an neurological examination
  • a musculoskeletal examination
  • and properly record physical examination findings and interpret the physical assessments of other clinicians
  • network and collaborate with clinicians with similar interests in patient care management.

Who Should Attend?
Pharmacists and Pharmacy Students

As pharmacists continue to gain prescribing protocol authority within their state pharmacy practice acts and/or their health care systems, they find themselves lacking the basic skills and knowledge that will help them advance professionally. To heighten their acceptance by patients, health care team workers, managed care administrators, and the marketplace, pharmacists must be both skilled and knowledgeable in the area of physical assessment. Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy in 1996 developed this advanced skills program in order to meet the national educational demands of practicing pharmacists. Over 3,400 pharmacists from all 50 states have attended this program since.

This program was designed originally for VA, Navy, Army and Air Force pharmacists plus pharmacy college faculty from around the country (Faculty from 68 colleges of pharmacy have attended). However, pharmacists from all backgrounds (community, managed care, institutional, private practice, etc) have benefited in numerous ways throughout the years.

Recently we have added forward thinking pharmacy students from any college who see one of the primary building blocks of MTM or Clinical Pharmacy being physical assessment. They have the ability to register for a two hour summer elective.

What Pharmacists Want

Through needs assessment inquiries, pharmacists repeatedly have requested programs that would enhance the skills and knowledge in fundamental areas that would have an immediate impact upon the way they practice pharmacy. As MTM and PPMI unveil themselves in healthcare reform as a "pay for performance" element, pharmacists will have to elevate their physical assessment knowledge/skills to a level where they are taken seriously by all providers. Pharmacists want these courses to be university based, of the highest quality, and reasonably priced. The price of the course has not changed from 1996.

Classroom & Lab Interactivity

Participants can expect to spend equal time in lecture and lab. Clinical interview and physical examination techniques will be explained and demonstrated before students practice these techniques upon one another. Charting, interpretation of findings, and evaluation of common clinical entities will be integrated into these activities.

Credits & Requirements

To receive 32 CE credits for pharmacists or 2 credit-hours for students, participants must attend the 2 1/2-day program, participate in the learning assessments, and submit a course evaluation.

To receive a certificate in Physical Assessment in Patient Care Management, participants must successfully complete competency-based outcome exams and physical assessment simulation and technique lab exams in the following areas:

NSU Continuing Education will submit the CE credits earned to CE Broker and to CPE Monitor for those participants who submit a signed Certificate of Participation and provide all requested license numbers and other relevant information.


Designed by pharmacists for pharmacists, this course is instructed by Elisa Ginter, DO, who is both an educator, formerly as an Associate Clinical Professor at Nova Southeastern University's College of Medicine and currently a Board Certified Family Practitioner at Ginter Wellness Primary Care. She will be assisted in lab by practicing clinical pharmacists who share the use of these skills in their practice sites.

Course Fees

The following fees for the Institute include academic fees, handouts, certificate, breakfasts and lunches.
The program uses the Bates Text which is not included in the fee. Earlier editions (than the 11th) can be used.

  • Pharmacists: $595
  • Organizations may enroll two participants for $1,000.
  • Pharmacy students: $1200.

Deadline for registration is July 17th, 2017. Refunds requested before July 20th, 2017 will be granted minus a ten dollar fee. No refunds after July 20th.

Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program has been approved for thirty-two general continuing professional education hours (3.2 CEUs). This program has also been approved for Florida Consultant Recertification, up to 32 hours, CE Broker Tracking #20-400576. For NSU and non-degree seeking pharmacy students, this course has been accredited for two credit-hours.
