FAQ
Dear Pharmacy Students:
I am pleased to inform you that The Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy (FMCP), in collaboration with the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP), is now accepting applications for twelve internship positions for the 2010 AMCP/FMCP/Pfizer Inc Managed Care Pharmacy Summer Internship Program and for two internship positions for the 2010 AMCP/FMCP/Allergan, Inc Specialized Summer Internship Program in Health Outcomes. The goal of the programs is to enhance a student pharmacist’s knowledge of managed care pharmacy practice principles and health outcomes research by direct hands-on involvement at managed health care system and health outcomes research experiential sites. The programs also expose them to career options in health plans, pharmacy benefit management companies, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the pharmaceutical industry.
For the AMCP/FMCP/Pfizer program ten managed care organizations and two VA medical centers will each host an intern. For the AMCP/FMCP Allergan program, the Allergan Global Health Outcomes Group ill host two interns at their headquarters in Irvine, CA. All students will complete a structured rotation under the supervision of a pharmacist preceptor and will be required to present a poster at AMCP's Educational Conference in October 2010 in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition, all AMCP/FMCP summer interns will participate in the Annual AMCP/FMCP Intern Best Project Competition. Interns will present their project posters to a panel of judges. Projects will be judged on the basis of scientific merit, innovation and practicality and presenter’s knowledge of the subject matter and ability to articulate key elements of their research. The competition winner will receive a $3500 scholarship and the runner-up will receive a $1500 scholarship award. Each will also receive an engraved plaque and recognition in the AMCP News.
The selection process is highly competitive. To be eligible for the AMCP/FMCP Summer Internship Programs, an undergraduate student must be enrolled full-time in their second or third professional year at an ACPE accredited school or college of pharmacy during the 2009-2010 academic year, with anticipated graduation in 2011 or 2012 with a PharmD degree. Three letters of reference must be supplied with each application, one from the dean of the school, one from a pharmacist faculty member and one from a non-relative pharmacist. A student may apply for both programs in the same year. However, separate applications and letters of reference are required for each program. Applications must be submitted online and letters of reference with attached application copies must be postmarked by February 1, 2010. Applicants must be able to complete the internship during a consecutive 10 week period between May and August 2010.
Over 100 student pharmacists have completed these programs since 1993 and we are confident that those participating in the 2010 programs will benefit from their experience.
I have attached copies of the announcements and frequently asked questions for each program. You will also receive banners to display. Please distribute this information to your AMCP Chapter members and other eligible students. They will find also complete program details, eligibility criteria and access to our online application process at FMCP’s website www.fmcpnet.org.
