The residencies offered by the College of pharmacy are directed postgraduate clinical training programs centering on developing the competencies and skills necessary to provide pharmaceutical care to a variety of patients. Competencies and outcomes are specific for individual residency programs.  Residencies are offered in the areas of Pharmacy Practice, Drug Information, and Psychiatry. Residency sites include the main campus as well as affiliated healthcare systems throughout south Florida.

Resident Responsibilities
The resident is expected to participate, contribute, and practice pharmaceutical care to enhance the care of patients on a daily basis on any give rotation. The resident is expected to originate a plan, develop a protocol, and conduct a clinical research project in an area of interest with the expectation of presenting study results at the Annual Southeast Regional Residency Conference.  In addition, publication of study results is intended. As part of the residency training experience, the resident will be given the opportunity to participate in both the didactic and experiential education of pharmacy students.

NSU Residency Programs:

Pharmacy Practice Residency (PGY-1)
The pharmacy practice residency is offered through Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy in partnership with Broward General Medical Center. It is a directed postgraduate program that centers on developing the competencies necessary to provide pharmaceutical care to a variety of patients, including both acute and chronic management patients. This residency and the criteria for evaluation are designed to meet the standards as set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The resident of the will participate in distributive as well as clinical pharmacy functions.  As a member of the multidisciplinary team, residents will experience a wide variety of practice environments with a large selection of electives throughout South Florida.  There are opportunities to expand and enhance knowledge base via training with an emphasis in acute care, ambulatory care, or pediatric care.  The resident will be integrated into the medication safety initiative process and manage various ambulatory clinics (longitudinal experiences) throughout the year.  As part of the residency training experience, the resident will be given the opportunity to participate in both the didactic and experiential education of pharmacy students. Additionally, the resident will be expected to originate a plan, develop a protocol, and conduct a clinical research project in an area of interest with the expectation of presenting or publishing the results of their study.

Length: 1 year
Start Date: July 1
Special Requirements for Acceptance:

  1. Pharm.D. or B.S. degree (which must be obtained prior to the first day of the residency) with licensure eligibility in Florida. 
  2. Licensure must be obtained within the first 60 days of the program and candidates must arrange to take the NAPLEX & Florida MPJE by July 30th of Residency year. 
  3. Eligibility to work by July 1st.

Residency in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice

The specialized residency in psychiatric pharmacy practice is offered through Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy. Practice opportunities exist at Atlantic Shores Psychiatric Hospital, the Miami Veterans Administration Medical Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and the West Palm Beach Veterans Administration Medical Center. It is a directed postgraduate program that centers on developing the competencies necessary to provide pharmaceutical care to psychiatric patients. This residency and the criteria for evaluation are designed to parallel or meet the standards as set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). As part of the residency training experience, the resident will be given the opportunity to participate in both the didactic and clerkship education of pharmacy students. Additionally, the resident will be expected to originate a plan, develop a protocol, and conduct a clinical research project in an area of interest with the intention of presenting or publishing the results of their study.

Residency in Drug Information

The specialized residency in Drug Information is offered through Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy.  This residency is designed to produce a drug information professional with skills in drug information retrieval and evidence-based analysis, didactic and experiential teaching, oral and written communication, health informatics applications, administration, and research design methods.  Experiences include, but are not limited to: medical writing, mentoring Pharm.D. students, formulary and drug use management, and quality assurance activities.  Residents may also pursue special opportunities focused within academia, drug informatics and specialized dietary supplement information.  A number of elective rotations are available to tailor the program for meeting the resident’s future goals.  The resident is required to complete and publish an original research project and provide service to the College via participation on a committee and as a class facilitator.  This residency and the criteria for evaluation are designed to parallel or meet the standards as set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
