2008 White Coat Ceremony– Davie-Ft. Lauderdale Campus
Sponsored by CVS Caremark
August, 2008

NSU Pharmacy Students recite the Pledge of Professionalism at Davie Campus

The white coat was introduced to medicine in Canada by Dr. George Armstrong (1855-1933) who was a surgeon at the Montreal General Hospital and President of the Canadian Medical Association.  The White Coat Ceremony is a relatively new ritual in some medical, podiatric, optometry, and pharmacy schools that marks the student's transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences. At some schools, where students begin meeting patients early in their education, the White Coat Ceremony is held before the first year begins.  The White Coat Ceremony typically involves a formal "robing" or "cloaking" of students in white coats, the distinctive attire physicians have traditionally worn for over 100 years and other health professions have adopted.  White Coat Ceremonies typically address the issue of medical ethics and praise rising incoming students for their success in completing the basic science portion of medical or pharmacy school. A reading of the Pledge of Professionalism by incoming pharmacy students declares their vow to build and reinforce a professional identity founded on integrity, ethical behavior, and honor as a vital process in their education. Upon their graduation then they will recite the Oath of Pharmacist vowing to devote themselves to a lifetime of service to others through the profession of pharmacy. It is common to invite students' family and friends to this beautiful ceremony. Over 100 medical schools in the USA now have a White Coat Ceremony and many students now consider it a rite of passage in the journey toward a medical career.  US pharmacy schools have held White Coat Ceremonies since 1995.
We recognize and greatly appreciate the continued generous sponsorship of this program by CVS Caremark.

NSU College of Pharmacy (COP) Student Society of Health System Pharmacy (SSHP) Officially Recognized by ASHP and Receives ASHP Student Society Development Seed Grant Award
August, 2008

The College of Pharmacy is proud to report that our COP SSHP (COP/SSHP) has completed the “triad” relationship amongst ASHP and the ASHP FSHSP.  The COP/SSHP has met the criteria for official ASHP recognition, including promotion of membership in local, state, and national health-system pharmacy careers, and completion of one ore more professional development projects to encourage career and professional development.  “This recognition could not have been possible without the great support from faculty, FSHP, student members, and our immediate past SSHP president, Tami Houser,” said Melissa Ortega, PharmD., Candidate 2010, NSU ASHP/FSHP Student Chapter President, AMCP & Phi Lambda Sigma Student Chapter Treasurer and Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, and Delta Rho Social Chair.

The COP is also very pleased to congratulate our Chapter for being one of ten schools selected throughout the United States to receive the extremely competitive ASHP Student Society Development Seed Grant award. The college also congratulates and thanks their faculty mentors who guided and inspired them to accomplish this honor - Antonia Zapantis, M.S., Pharm. D., BCPS, Assistant Professor and Ms. Claire Gallicano, M.A., Director of Student Services.

The program provides small seed grants to assist ASHP affiliates and college of pharmacy partners in establishing and strengthening the activities of pharmacy students interested in health-systems pharmacy practice at each college of pharmacy.  This program is intended for use by the ASHP state affiliate and college of pharmacy partners to bring together appropriate representatives of the colleges of pharmacy, interested students and student leaders, and state society leadership to determine the most effective methods to establish a new student society of health-system pharmacy, or to strengthen an existing student society.

The Mentoring Institute for HIV and Mental Health Research is a National Institute of Health funded initiative directed by Dr. Silvia E. Rabionet, NSU College of Pharmacy.  Dr. Carmen Zorrilla is the program’s Principal Investigator and Dr. Lydia Santiago is the program’s Co-Director – both from the University of Puerto Rico.  The Institute's objectives are to: establish a long-term mentoring program for junior faculty in professional schools in Puerto Rico willing to conduct HIV related research; support junior investigators to develop a career plan by partnering them with local and mainland mentors; encourage and facilitate the development of career plans with the specific goal of the eventual application for NIH funding for HIV related research; and to facilitate the creation of multidisciplinary and multi-institutional research teams through mentoring.

The participating institutions are NSU College of Pharmacy, Ponce Site, the University of Puerto Rico (several Campuses and Centers), the Ponce School of Medicine (including the Clinical Psychology program), and the Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine.  The Institute was inaugurated with a workshop: "Conceptualizing Research: Significance, Innovation and Collaboration", held July 16-17, 2008 at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. The participants had the opportunity to discuss research ideas from a multidisciplinary perspective. Twenty six researchers from the biomedical, social and behavioral fields participated.  Congratulations to Drs. College of Pharmacy American Pharmacists Association (APhA) - Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP) Chapter Helps Pass Legislation
July 2007

The College of Pharmacy (COP) extends congratulations to the APhA – ASP Chapter for receiving the coveted APhA 2008 Legislative & Policy Award.  This award recognizes the Chapter’s hard work and successful efforts to engage local community and state government officials in community outreach events creating awareness regarding the profession of pharmacy today.

Some of the events which resulted in this award included the Chapter’s participation in State Representative Eleanor Sobel’s Annual Health Fair to outreach to diverse communities; the NOVA Southeastern University’s (NSU) Day for Children and Health Aging Expo to promote the pharmacist’s important role in immunizations and to provide education about current state legislation regarding the pharmacy profession.  The Chapter also participated in a campaign supporting the immunization bill and to encourage and empower pharmacy students to participate in the legislative process with their state representatives.  The COP Chapter’s hard work, along with that of many Florida pharmacists and other students, actually helped pass legislation allowing pharmacists to provide immunization services – the bill went into July 1, 2007.  The COP ASP Chapter is committed to continue to collaborate and engage in productive dialogue with government officials to secure the future of the profession of pharmacy.

Lastly, the COP also congratulates Vivian Sumi Lee Pharm.D., 2009 Candidate for her published work:  “Legislative efforts to help the community and the profession,” which appeared in the July/August 2008 Student Pharmacist newsmagazine – an official publication of the APhA.

College of Pharmacy student, Laura Chan, has been chosen to participate in the American Pharmacists Association’s International Pharmaceutical Student’s Federation (IPSF) Student Exchange Program (SEP) in Madrid, Spain in June, 2008.
May, 2008

Laura Chan explains that since her first year as a pharmacy student, she has been excited and has wanted to participate in an organization that encourages a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary approach to the field of pharmacy by educating domestic and international students. She goes on to say, “Considering the ever-increasing rate of social and economic globalization, pharmacists carry a heavy burden to promote the current state-of-the-art in treatment and medication options world-wide. Moreover, pharmacists have a critical role to fulfill in enhancing cultural awareness and acceptance in a time when understanding the challenges of other cultures are so critical to the advancement of healthcare within the global community.”   Laura Chan will incorporate her keen interest in studying the similarities and differences between our healthcare system in the United States with other nations, the role of the pharmacist in other countries, and finally, the various medications and treatment methods that are employed abroad. Laura Chan
Laura Chan - the College of Pharmacy student.
From the wide-array of experiences that Chan will acquire during the exchange program, she plans to use her pharmaceutical skills and education to improve the quality of care in Madrid and to integrate the practice of international pharmacy techniques to her education and professional career in the United States. Furthermore, Chan states that the experience of practicing pharmacy internationally will allow her to learn and apply national and international healthcare regulations to better prepare her for the opportunities and global healthcare challenges that face future generations.

As part of her responsibilities as an IPSF exchange student, Laura will partner with the American Pharmacists Association chapter at NOVA’s College of Pharmacy to organize presentations for pharmacy students to promote the exchange program and emphasize the importance of hosting international students at the college and university-wide. Finally, learning and practicing pharmacy in a different country, Chan hopes to advance her personal and professional growth through the perspective of foreign citizens, giving her important cross-cultural skills needed in culturally diverse settings. This is Laura’s second experience as an exchange student – in high school she participated in a summer exchange program to San Jose, Costa Rica where the experience, she says, gave her an improved world perspective and the opportunity to gain confidence speaking the Spanish language.

On behalf of the College of Pharmacy – Congratulations!

Frederick Lippman, B.Sc., R.Ph., Ed.D., Chancellor, Health Professions Division receives special recognition award to honor him as a pharmacist, statesman, and educator at the NSU HPD College of Pharmacy Awards Ceremony May 3, 2008
May, 2008
Dr. Lippman receiving an award

Andrés Malavé, M.S., Ph.D., Dean, College of Pharmacy presents Frederick Lippman, B.Sc., R.Ph., Ed.D., Chancellor, Health Professions Division with a special recognition award.

Dr. Lippman and Dean
In just over twenty short years, since the College of Pharmacy was established in 1987, Dr. Lippman has orchestrated a growth unmatched by other long existing colleges. His entrepreneurial mentality, juxtaposed with his humanitarian efforts to always look out for the welfare and emerging needs of our communities, is highly exemplified by major milestones boasted by the HPD / COP under his influence. His long-time successful career in pharmacy and academia spans to today - and will undoubtedly spill into the future success of the Health Professions Division and the College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Fred Lippman's vision, early on in his career, anticipated the changing “team” role of the pharmacist in society and the need for additional highly-trained pharmacists to effectively address the future healthcare needs of Floridians. His exemplary professional and personal leadership later become a catalyst for awareness and action to tackle the challenge that exists even today and ultimately forged the creation of NSU’ College of Pharmacy.

As a pharmacist and statesman he laid the foundation for proactive action regarding prescription privileges and successfully advocated for legislation to expand the boundaries of professional practice to include prescriptive authority for pharmacists. His passion and arduous dedication has gained him innumerable accolades and copious awards from the industry and community for his service, leadership, advocacy, and civic roles including the prestigious Hubert H. Humphrey Award from the American Pharmacist Association for his major contributions in government and legislative service.

Since his appointment as Chancellor of the NSU HPD in 2004, he continues to guide the colleges to produce top health care professionals, conducting cutting-edge medical research and continuing the community outreach clinical programs that have always been part of the university's mission.

De Napoli, Ed.D., Dean, International Affairs, Fischler School of Education, representing NOVA Southeastern University’s President, Mr. Ray Ferrero Jr.  The agreement was endorsed by Ebada Sarha, Ph.D., President of FUE and Osama Salama, Ph.D., Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Pharmaceutical Industries, FUE.

This international collaborative exchange will benefit and contribute to inter-institutional linkages for educational cooperation and assistance at each university for:

  • Faculty exchange for teaching by developing workshops and institutes;
  • Student exchange to visit and/or enroll in academic programs, and other student activities;
  • Collaborative research, including joint hosting of seminars, conferences, workshops, and other activities such as sabbaticals; and
  • Library Services to support and strengthen academic cooperation through library services among the academic units.

The COP recognizes the importance of an international presence and collaboration that improves students’ understanding of diversity in pharmacy practices and knowledge of cross-cultural health care among different ethnic populations.  The collaboration of the COP with FUE will contribute to strengthening the education of students and the attainment of groundbreaking research by scholars at both institutions.

Summer Study Abroad Program 2008 is underway
April, 2008
Great Wall 2007

The theme of this year’s College of Pharmacy (COP) Study Abroad Program is the “Study of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Culture Exploration” in China and Japan, Beijing, Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto.  The program, scheduled from June 7th to June 28th, is a continuation to the 2007 program visit to China by fifty-one pharmacy students, pharmacists and faculty who also traveled to Beijing and Shanghai.
The study abroad program at the COP introduces participants to non-traditional medicine and cultural exploration.  The program - which was envisioned by Andrés Malavé, Ph.D., dean of the COP – is coordinated by Leanne Lai, Ph.D., director of the COP’s International Program.  In Dr. Lai’s words, “In today’s global conflict, we deeply believe in the importance of training in cross-cultural health care – international education will be the solution to the world’s strife.”

The program is designed to allow participants to engage in clinical observations of patient care, and diagnosis of ailment and diseases using traditional medicine philosophy.  They will be taught ways to treat patients and practice how to effectively and accurately apply the traditional methods of health care and to administer proper treatments.  In addition to academics, the program will provide the opportunity to also explore China’s historical sites and acquire an understanding and appreciation of the Chinese culture.

International Program Graduates 2008
College of Pharmacy International Program for Foreign Pharmacists
Class of 2008.

The International Program for Foreign Pharmacists educates students to achieve the same outcomes as the entry level Pharm.D. Degree Program. Courses integrate information and build upon one another to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the profession. Pharmaceutics, Pharmacokinetics, and Nonprescription Therapies courses provide a strong understanding of the principles of drug therapy. The business, human relation, communication, marketing and legal aspects of pharmacy and the health care system are also studied. Courses focus on application of material learned, the use of drugs in the disease process, and developing skills essential to monitoring drug therapy. Students hone their analytical skills with courses in Research Design and Statistics, Pharmacoepidemiology, and Pharmacoeconomics and Drug Literature Evaluation.

Practice experiences in community, hospital, service/learning, and traditional pharmacy settings facilitate real-life application of the material and provide opportunities to integrate information learned. Full-time clerkships and externships facilitate application of drug therapy monitoring with more independence.  The curriculum stresses innovative delivery and assessment methods.
Under the direction of Leanne Lai, Ph.D., the international Pharm. D. program continues to gain international recognition providing quality advanced pharmacy education to meet the complex challenges of modern medicine.

NSU College of Pharmacy Bids Best Wishes to Dr. H. John Baldwin, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education, on His Retirement
February, 2008

Dr. H. John Baldwin was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Manitoba. After practicing as a pharmacist for two years, he went to Purdue University for graduate studies, earning his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both with majors in Drug Marketing and minors in Consumer Psychology and Sociology. Dr. H. Baldwin’s master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation were on pharmaceutical advertising.

Hence, Dr. H. Baldwin’s research interest throughout his entire academic career, a 40-year span, has been focused on perceived risk of medications as an influence on consumer purchase decisions – a field of growing concern based on as recent events such as advertising of prescription drugs direct to consumers by the media.  Since 1964, he has been an avid advocate for lay consumers’ right to make decisions about their own health choice, including the decision to purchase, use, or prescribe prescription drugs.

Dr. H. Baldwin joined the College of Pharmacy in 2002, after spending 16 years as dean of the school of pharmacy at the University of Wyoming, bringing his experience and expertise in the behavioral sciences as well as faculty expertise ranging from practice to basic laboratory sciences.  He immediately seized the opportunity to mentor the “new generation of pharmacy academics” present at the college.  He has since contributed greatly to the increase in research productivity, in externally funded research, and in peer-reviewed publications by pharmacy faculty.

The College of Pharmacy faculty, students, and staff thanks Dr. H. John Baldwin for his many endeavors and hopes his future retirement years will serve to enhance and complement his many personal and professional achievements.

Nova Southeastern University now has a Student National Pharmaceutical Association Chapter
February, 2008

SNPhA is an educational service association of pharmacy students who are concerned about health related issues, the poor minority representation in pharmacy and other health-related professions. The purpose of SNPhA is to plan, organize, coordinate and execute programs geared toward the
improvement for the health, educational, and social environment of the community.
At Nova Southeastern University’s College of Pharmacy, SNPhA chapter we will develop professionalism by utilizing classroom knowledge and reaching out into the community. Communication with patients on understanding their healthcare issues will help students develop interpersonal skills needed for their future profession. By reaching out to the patients, students will gain crucial one on one experience. From these interactions, patients will benefit by understanding their healthcare needs while students expose them to the diversity with the pharmacy field.  SNPhA will also be going to undergraduate classes generating interest in the pharmacy profession. Mock PCATs and study materials will be given to those who are interested.

Nova Southeastern University SNPhA chapter’s inaugural event will be in collaboration with APhA, helping raise funds for the American Heart Association Heart Walk on March 8, 2008. It will be held at Nova Southeastern University starting at 9 a.m. This will be a great opportunity to expose the community to the dangers of hypertension.. In closing, please look out for future announcements and events held by SNPhA, we hope to see you there!
