As a NSU student you will receive two sets of pairs: Username/Password. One is your Email Name and Password, the other is your NSU ID and PIN. These you will use throughout the years while being a student at NSU to login to various resources. The explanation of these usernames and passwords and their use is found on the http://www.nova.edu/cwis/oit/nsuidentity.html webpage.

Refer to policies on World Wide Web pages on Acceptable Use of Computing Resources, Use of Material in Web Pages and Web Policy on Common Gateway Interface (CGI) Programs on the official Nova Southeastern University homepage:
http://www.nova.edu/common-lib/policies/index.html

All students outside of Broward County must provide their own ISP (Internet Service Provider) for Web access. Students may use NSU as their ISP, but please note that this is a toll-free call only within the (954) area code. Students outside the (954) area code are encouraged to subscribe to an ISP. Check this web page when you are looking for an ISP:

Once you are a registered Nova Southeastern University student you will receive:

  • an NSU ID and PIN (which you will use to register for classes, access your student records and student services via the Student Information System: http://webstar.nova.edu),
  • UNIX username and password, referred to as NSU Login or Email Name and password (which you will use to login to NSU resources and to access your Nova email via web browser, see instructions below), and
  • an email account (your Nova email address will be: username@nsu.nova.edu, where username is the Email Name, see above).

Make sure to keep these various usernames and passwords and not misplace them. You will use the NOVA email account (separate from your ISP's email account) to communicate with your teachers and fellow students at NSU.

To gain access to the Internet via Nova as your ISP (if you live in Broward county and do not have an outside ISP like EarthLink, CompuServe, AOL, etc.) you need to set up your computer for the connection. It is assumed that your computer has a modem or other means of connection to the Internet. Click on the links below for detailed instructions on how to configure different settings on your computer: http://www.nova.edu/help/internet

Once you complete the setup of the connection to NSU, you can access the Internet by clicking on the "My connection" (or whatever other title you have given to the connection) icon on your Desktop. After the connection is established start the Internet browser (click on the Internet Explorer or Netscape icon on your Desktop).

The first time you open your browser after establishing the connection to NSU, configure the browser to send and to receive mail. Instructions for this process are available at: http://www.nova.edu/help/email/

To close the connection when you finish working in your browser, click on the "My connection" (or whatever other title you have given to the connection) icon and click on the "Disconnect" button.

More information on this subject is available at: http://www.nova.edu/help/support.html

Also, the following is some useful information you might need for the set up:

New Gateway 137.52.200.1
Primary Domain Server: 137.52.224.11
Secondary Domain Server: 137.52.224.19
Domain Name: nova.edu
POP Server: pop.nova.edu
SMTP Server: pop.nova.edu
NNTP (News) Server: draco.nova.edu

Accessing your email away from home

When you are not at your own computer (where you have your set up for email) you can access your email anywhere using any Internet browser. Just access: http://mail.nova.edu. You will be asked to enter your NSU (UNIX) username and password.

Forwarding NSU email to an outside ISP mailbox

If you are using an outside ISP and would like to forward your mail from NSU to the ISP (so you don't have to constantly check multiple mailboxes), you may do that on the web by going to: http://www.nova.edu/common-lib/docs/emailfwd.html. You will be asked to login using your NSU username and password. You will need then to enter the email address for your outside ISP. Note: Don't forget to change the forwarding address if you change ISPs!

Some of the resources in NSU are only available to students, faculty and staff, not to "outside" users. You will be asked to enter your username and password to access these resources. Note that NSU uses a Unix operating system. UNIX is case sensitive, thus "HPD", "Hpd", and "hpd" are all different names under UNIX. NSU Logins and Passwords are all in lowercase - make sure the "Caps Lock" key on your keyboard is not on.

  • Enter your login or username exactly as given, press <Enter>
  • Enter your password exactly as printed (even though you will only see ****** via PPP or nothing at all in telnet), then press <Enter>

You may change your NSU password at http://www.nova.edu/bin/changepass.
Be aware that some of the resources do not update passwords and require that you continue to use the old password or contact your professor. More important areas such as online classrooms will update changed passwords instantaneously or within a few hours.
